FEBRUARY 2005
Greetings one and all and welcome back to another year in the life of Cold Flame.
Having taken a lengthy Christmas and New Year break the band have now reconvened
to work on studio and live material as we prepare for the months ahead. As usual
there have been some slight modifications to the website generally and our webmeister
Wal has sorted out some great photos taken by resident band photographer Stuart
Steele taken from the band's recent winter '04 Tull tribute shows. Check out
the About and Live sections to see just how gorgeous we all looked .A big thank
you goes out to the Glossop community who have supported the release of the
'Sports in Perfect Harmony' cd raising well over £2500 for St.Philip Howard
School. See you all soon....somewhere down the end of your road.
THE NEW BOY
After several months of discussion Cold Flame have decided to expand their line
up. Our good friend and multi instrumentalist Davyd Simpson, has agreed to join
the band primarily as the keyboard player in our Jethro Tull tribute shows.
Davyd, who lives just down the road, will perhaps already be familiar to some
having appeared as a guest musician on a couple of our Autumn shows. Further
back in time Davyd was a regular on the Tameside folk scene and at one stage
even ran his own folk club.During this period Davyd moonlighted occassionally
with a couple of local rock bands. These days when not working for the govt.
Davyd spends his time writing and recording his own compositions in his 16 track
home studio. Add to this a healthy sense of humour ,a full head of hair and
a lover of Tull music.....Make Davyd welcome as and when you see him on stage
possibly wearing a vanilla white ice cream suit. Check out the message board
as we have just given Davyd his own thread ie mates are able to tell the world
just how our newest member ticks! In the meantime Simon having finally completed
his studies at Stafford University has now entered the real world ie. the world
of work and consequently due to new time constraints will be sharing guitar
duties with the ever faithful Dave Conner.
THE GIG GUIDE
Flame fans will be pleased to know that new dates for 2005 are now being booked
or negotiated even as we speak. Check out the gig guide for further details. Our
first performance of the new year will be at one of our fave venues - The Cheshire
Cheese in Buxton on Saturday Feb. 12th. Look forward to seeing lots of familiar
as well as new faces at one of Derbyshire's premier venues. For more details
talk to us on the night.
URIAH HEEP
The support slot with Uriah Heep at Manchester's Academy a couple of months
ago was a great success. It was tremendous to play alongside one of the all time
British rock legends and to be appreciated by so many Heep fans particularly
as our set consisted of material taken from our last two studio albums. The only
real downer was the difficulty we had on the night of advertising our merchandise
though email and message board feedback as well as ample use of the website
shop shows we must have got something right ! Check out the official
Uriah Heep website for further top coverage of the gig. Meantime for those
of you who were not there here are some pics taken
by Heep fans Adrian and Elaine.
A NEW DAY RECORDS
As announced during the Autumn, Cold Flame have just been signed up by A New
Day Records.Unfortunately there has been a delay in sorting new pressings out
but I am reliably informed by N.D.R. that sooner rather than later, this will
be sorted. The national independant record company which specialises in contemporary
rock, blues and folk music has an impressive client base which includes Martin
Barre, Mick Abrahams,Martin Allcock,Clive Bunker,Steve Howe, Nine below Zero,Jackie
Lynton,Vicky Clayton,The Mechanics.... to name but a few living legends . We
are certainly in the company of great musicians and songwriters. Under the distribution
deal our studio effort from 2003, The Seven Seas, will be the first Cold Flame
album to be distributed nationally under the New Day Records banner. Meantime
check out the record company website which you will find on our links page.
More details soon.
COLD FLAME NEW ALBUMS
As previously mentioned in the Autumn, there are plans this year to rerelease
both of Patrick's solo albums from the 1990's with bonus tracks, some of which
feature other members of Cold Flame. More details soon. Additionally for all
you Tull fans out there, there are recordings of our Tull tribute shows from
both 2003 and 2004 that we are currently considering as viable live albums safely
locked away in the vaults at Shipwreck Studios just itching to see the light
of day. In 2002 the band released the studio album 'Still Burning the Blues'
- a collection of new, unreleased and alternative studio recordings made over
the previous five years. It seems that we are probably in the same position
again in that we have a bunch of new and unreleased studio material which collectively
we will look to release as a new album sometime this year under the working
title 'Still Burning the Blues Vol. 2'. Watch this space.
ROLLBACK
Best wishes go out to Chapel en
le Frith YR.11 schoolgirl Janet O'Toole and her musical friends who will be
performing their version of Rollback from the Sports in
Perfect Harmony album as part of a G.C.S.E. submission this summer. We wish
Janet and her friends all the best and thank her for her excellent taste in
music.
POSTCRIPT
Funny who you bump into when enjoying the craic at Cropredy as you can see from the following two photo's taken at last year's annual Fairport bash in the middle of the Oxfordshire countryside.Patrick sans beard snapped with Tull bassist Jonathon Noyce as well as New Day Records guru David Rees - note David's elder brother in the background and what the hell is that that David is carressing gently in his hands ?
